Is a Magician job description even a thing?
Do people even consider the occupation of a magician to be a job? I recall often times when I would be out performing magic gigs, as a full-time performer, they would often ask what do you do for a real job?
At times, I would feel insulted, but then thinking it through, it does seem pretty amazing, that a person can earn their living by doing magic tricks.
As a full-time professional, I was pretty much working through the late 70s, 80s and then 90s. I would perform at corporate events like their awards banquet, holiday parties, company picnics and sales meetings.
Then, for fairs and festivals I would perform at city celebrations and county fairs.
There were always fundraisers and gals that were looking for entertainment, and I was there to add a magic touch.
This performance career, did evolve into being an entertainment agency where I would get gigs for other performers. I also then got into the event industry, where I was producing events and then tradeshows and expos.
So yes! It can be done.
Being in the entertainment business, you need to have a business mind as well as an entertainer mind.
In the video below, I have a conversation with my magician colleague and friend Steven Hart. He is also a professional performer and has had many successes in his life.
